As a compliance professional of over 22 years, spanning different industries while remaining focused on the product, I have wondered how I can apply Simon Sinek’s concept of the “Why” of work to my current and future roles. I hope you will consider (and add to) the following:
- Identify: Identify the purpose behind your work in compliance. The purpose can be your work’s impact on the company, its employees, and stakeholders or a mission that aligns with your values.
- Communicate: Communicate your “Why” to your team and colleagues clearly and concisely. Communicate the purpose of compliance, such as protecting the company and its employees from legal or financial risks.
- Align: Use your “Why” as a guide when making decisions and prioritizing tasks. Align all compliance decisions and actions with this purpose.
- Emphasize: Emphasize the importance of compliance to the company’s success, not just meeting legal and regulatory requirements or obligations. Articulating the importance of compliance helps build buy-in from stakeholders and employees.
- Create: Create a positive and engaging workplace culture by fostering open communication, and collaboration, while emphasizing psychological safety and diversity of thought.
- Recognize: Recognize and reward the achievements of the compliance team to build engagement and motivation.
