As Women’s History Month kicks off, it’s pertinent to remember and acknowledge the accomplishments and contributions of women throughout history. But as a black woman, I want to take this opportunity to talk about what it means to belong as a black woman.
For many black women, we experience a sense of not quite belonging. We can feel like outsiders in predominantly white spaces or must constantly prove ourselves to people to take us seriously. The dearth of representation of black women in many industries and fields can compound this feeling of not belonging.
But the truth is, black women have always belonged. From the beginning, black women have been integral to shaping this country and this world. We have been innovators, creators, and leaders in our own right, despite the systemic barriers that have tried to keep us out.
As a black woman, I belong everywhere, including the classroom, boardroom, lab, courtroom, and any space I choose to occupy. I bring a unique perspective, a wealth of knowledge and experience, and a determination to succeed despite the odds.
So this Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate all women’s accomplishments and recognize black women’s unique challenges and experiences. Let’s acknowledge that black women have always belonged, and let’s continue to work towards creating a more inclusive and equitable world where all women can thrive.
