Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the renowned Nigerian Novelist, said, “If you don’t understand, ask questions. If you’re uncomfortable about asking questions, say you are uncomfortable about asking questions and then ask anyway. It’s easy to tell when a question is coming from a good place. Then listen some more. Sometimes people just want to feel heard. Here’s to possibilities of friendship and connection and understanding.”
Lately, in moments of self-reflection, I have asked, what are some of the things I would tell my younger self? As a black woman, I have told myself, “Abi, Believe in yourself and your voice.” Your voice matters! Keep reading and Keep learning! Keep writing! So, what are some of the things you would say to your younger self?
As a Black Woman (because I am one), here are some things I might tell my younger self:
- You are strong and capable: Remind yourself that you are strong and capable and that you have what it takes to achieve your goals and overcome any obstacles that come your way.
- Believe in yourself: Believe in yourself and your abilities, and don’t let anyone else’s opinion of you define who you are or what you’re capable of achieving.
- Surround yourself with positive role models: Find positive role models who look like you and have achieved success in your field. This can help to counteract the lack of representation and provide inspiration and motivation.
- Speak up and assert yourself: Don’t be afraid to speak up and assert yourself in professional settings. Share your ideas, ask questions, and don’t be scared to take on new challenges.
- Educate yourself: Learn about the history of black people and how systemic racism affects the lives of black people today.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Don’t be scared to ask for help or support when needed. You don’t have to go through difficult times alone.
- Take care of yourself: Remember to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Self-care is essential to maintaining your well-being and resilience.
- Don’t give up: Keep pushing forward, no matter how difficult things get. Remember that you are capable of achieving great things and that you deserve to be happy and prosperous.
- Embrace your identity: Embrace your identity as a black woman and be proud of who you are. Your unique experiences and perspectives are valuable and essential.
- Remember that you are not alone: Remember that you are not alone in your experiences and that many other black women have faced similar challenges. You are part of a larger community of strong and resilient women.
Some black women have spoken to their younger selves. Here are some of their quotes:

“I would tell my younger self to never give up on your dreams, and to always stay true to yourself.” – Serena Williams
“I would tell my younger self to be confident in who you are and never change for anyone.” – Taraji P. Henson
“I would tell my younger self that your voice is powerful, use it. Speak up for yourself and others. Stand up for what is right, even when it’s not popular.” – Angela Davis
